EVMS 20 Twenty Capital Campaign

Inclusion in the Commonwealth’s higher-education bond package meant the first state money for capital construction at EVMS. However, building a new educational space and making the necessary renovations required additional funds and led to the launch of the successful 20 Twenty Capital Campaign.

When Eastern Virginia Medical School found itself included in a state bond package for the first time ever, it was both a surprise and a challenge. The Commonwealth provided much-need money (and a significant amount) but not enough to cover the complete capital construction and renovation project. As a result, EVMS embarked on the 20 Twenty Capital Campaign.

Two years later, the campaign concluded having raised 150 percent of what outside consultants predicted possible. This was a tribute to strong collaboration, the crafting of compelling stories, creation of quality collateral materials, and focused communications strategy. Given the accelerated timeframe for the campaign, our Marketing & Communications and Development teams had to work quickly to develop a theme, messaging and high-quality support materials. While much work was done in-house, we also utilized our Agency of Record to develop materials (a relationship and creative process I closely managed).

When our then-President, Harry T. Lester, announced his plan to retire in April 2013, we combined the celebration of his tenure with the celebration of the capital campaign’s success given his integral role in raising money for the campaign and in securing the state funding for the construction and renovation project.
