To implement its new strategic plan, EVMS did something it had never been done before: shut down. On Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010, more than 1,500 EVMS faculty, staff, students and residents gathered at Old Dominion University’s Ted Constant Convocation Center to attend the Mission: Possible strategic plan launch event.

Summary:

More than 1,500 EVMS faculty, staff, students and residents attended the strategic plan launch event, the highest attendance in the school’s history for any school-wide event. Participants learned about the school’s revised mission statement and its new vision statement, core values, and strategic goals. Of the 1,500 surveys distributed, 705 were returned. Results showed 79 percent of attendees felt they knew more about the strategic plan after the event, and 74 percent felt better prepared to tell others about EVMS, its vision and its new strategic plan. On a scale of 1 to 5 (5 being very useful), attendees averaged the usefulness of the event at a 4, with 50 percent rating the event a 4 or higher.

Staff and administration, the largest segment of the school’s employee base and a group that had frequently felt neglected, responded most positively: 90 percent indicated they knew more about the plan, and 83 percent felt prepared to share EVMS’ story with others.

While some faculty were resistant to the mandatory nature of the event, 82 percent still indicated that they knew more about the strategic plan after the event. Thus, we met our goals of educating and informing campus constituents.

As a result of the survey, we realized that the EVMS community wanted more detailed information about the plan. This resulted in ongoing blog posts about specific elements of the plan, quarterly town hall meetings and continued reporting and accountability on metrics.

The strategic plan launch event earned a 2010 PRSA Hampton Roads Pinnacle Award.
